What’s in a name?
Just got back from San Francisco/Silicon Valley where I met up with my class of the Masters in Digital Marketing in IE Business school for our 2nd Face-to-Face period. I can clearly state that it was greatly inspiring to visit companies like Google, EA, Symantec, Autodesk and Zynga. We also visited some incubators where we had the privilege to hear people launching their own startups in “the Valley”. A great part of this second period of the Masters degree focuses on developing an entrepreneurial project which will be presented during graduation week to a panel of great professionals and possibly VCs (funding!). Together with my partner in this project, we have developed a business idea which we believe has great potential to be successful and if all goes well will allow us to dedicate 100% of our time in scaling it at a global level. It is still too soon to start talking about the project itself greatly because we are still deciding on a name for it.
What’s in a name?
I have been involved in a startup before that unfortunately never launched. I did learn a great deal about developing a business plan and model, and maybe that is why I am putting so much pressure in getting the right name for the project. When you are developing a business, you will eat, sleep and breath the business and the name is something that will constantly come up. It has to be a name that you are confident with because at the end of the day, you will repeat it millions of times in your life. Needless to say, the overall brand identity is just as important. Although my project never launched, halfway through its development I decided to change the logo and colors. Believe me, it cause much confusion to many people and entities I had already presented the project to. So, in a nutshell, between finding the ideal name, an available domain and a solid logo/identity goes requires a lot of effort and inspiration. The best part is… we haven’t even started developing the project itself! No one said it would be easy. Wish us luck! I’ll keep you updated!
The Future of Productivity
I just came across this really interesting video created by Microsoft (with the help of General Motors) that predicts the future of productivity through technology. If you look closely, some things are already being used, not exactly in such a interactive and advanced way, but still I see some Flipboard inspired examples and a location-based service on steroids. We all like to envision what the future will be like, and that is why the title of this video has the date included in parenthesis. We can look back at it in 20 years and see how different things turned out. Well, we will just have to wait and see how it turns out.

The Potential of Social Media for Businesses and More
The effect that social media has had on marketing techniques is indisputable. Traditional marketing tools are in a downfall and brands no longer have control over their customers. So based on what we have witnessed since the explosion of the Web 2.0, it is clear that brands have to become a part of the community and engage in conversations with their customers. Brands had to dismount from their metaphoric high-horse and mingle with the crowd.
